ALCOSYS uses a computer-based analysis method, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), to calculate the response of a model by solving a set of simultaneous equations that represent the behavior of the structure under external loading. Working in tandem with FEA, we use Finite Element Modeling (FEM) to set up a model for analysis. This typically involves graphical generation of the model geometry, meshing it into finite elements, defining material properties, and applying loads and boundary conditions. This type of analysis is general and can be applied to a variety of physical problems from other modals.
FEM was used specifically for crashworthiness testing for the Department of Transportation, which regularly performs simulations of vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-barrier, and component impact tests. The success of this approach is evident in the close agreement between full-scale tests and simulations.
